These stories take their departure from one of the classical Ananse stories, which originated in Ghana, concerning the gathering and then the spreading of common sense or wisdom. These stories travelled to the Caribbean and Americas with the people who were enslaved and trafficked during the Maafa, a time of great loss and grief for both the people and the Earth which were involved in this sad separation.
Trees are central to these stories, understood to be elder beings, which both host and enable the drawing out of cultural wisdoms and traditional relationships between people and nature. These stories are examples to all those who understand that they belong to the Earth, and who are, therefore, indigenous people. They can enable all of us to recall life as it can be lived, in harmony with as well as upon the Earth.
