In his book, London Tree Walks, Paul Wood devised a route through Pimlico which takes in the Churchill Gardens Estate.
We are delighted that Paul will lead a series of tours focused on the estate during the Urban Tree Festival. There are dozens of exceptional trees to see including such rarities as a Varnish Tree and an Italian Maple.
Event Information
Churchill Gardens in Pimlico is one the greenest postwar housing estates as well as being one of the biggest and most admired modernist developments in the UK.
Construction work started on the 1600 homes in 1946 and the final phase was completed in the early 1960s. Central to the estate’s design are the green spaces and especially the trees that are such a striking feature among the housing blocks. The trees have matured over the last eighty years and have turned this corner of SW1 into a veritable arboretum.
In his book, London Tree Walks, Paul Wood devised a route through Pimlico which takes in Churchill Gardens, and we are delighted that Paul will lead a series of tours focused on the estate during the Urban Tree Festival. There are dozens of exceptional trees to see including such rarities as a Varnish Tree and an Italian Maple.
Other trees of note include the relocated Milbank Palm, some of the best Chinese Tree Privets and one of the largest Nettle Trees in London. Paul will focus on the remarkable trees and gardens of the estate, but there he will also introduce you to the fascinating architecture including the iconic Accumulator Tower and other listed buildings.
The tours are open to all and will last approximately an hour and a half.
Tours are organised in partnership with the Churchill Gardens Residents Association, and are free for Residents of Churchill Gardens Estate and Russell House, all other attendees must purchase a ticket.
All ticket revenue will be donated to the Urban Tree Festival. Each tour starts promptly at 11:00 and is limited to 25 people. Tours take place on Saturday 12th, Sunday 13th and Sunday 19th May.
