Tree Craftivism

How to make cross stitch signs that encourage people to look after trees

It's gentle, but persuasive... Using craft to campaign does have an impact, as comedian Jenny Eclair found in her BBC programme 'Craftivism – Making a Difference'.

The word Craftivism comes from craft + activism, and it's well suited to social media and for people who don't feel comfortable going on marches or throwing flour at politicians.

In this video, Tonia Clark, Chair of Birmingham Tree People, shows how to do a simple cross-stitch sign that can be tied to tree stakes or to a tree under threat. The signs are meant to be temporary so as not to damage the tree. So make a sign, tie it on, share it on social media and take it down after a couple of weeks.

Watch the video to find out how to make your own craftivist tree signs…
