Event Information
The charity Street Trees for Living together with green tech startup Greentalk and Lewisham Council have been piloting a street tree adoption and care project in Lewisham.
It engages, recruits and supports residents through the lifecycle of tree care from site identification, adoption and tree care over a three year period. With funding from the Mayor of London’s Grow Back Greener Fund, the partners have worked to identify vacant tree pits in areas of the borough with high emissions, high flood risk, and low tree canopy area that can be reopened and new trees planted.
The trees will be paid for by the Mayor of London and Lewisham Council, and volunteer Tree Guardians are being recruited who can adopt tree pits close to their home or work. Once the trees are planted by the end of 2023, volunteer Tree Guardians will become responsible for watering their trees, helping to ensure they survive and thrive through the crucial first three years.

Grow Back Together is an innovative project in Lewisham pioneering a new approach to engaging residents with street tree care. The project is live at growbacktogether.org.
The project combines the specialisms of Street Trees for Living (volunteer coordination and tree care) and Greentalk’s innovative technology platform enabling the mapping of tree pits, volunteer recruitment and ongoing tree care communication.
The project is supported by Lewisham Council who have provided information on vacant tree pits, carried out inspections, stencilled promotional pavement ads and helped to raise awareness of the project through their communication channels.
