A blog from Sustainable Life Birmingham

Sustainable Life work alongside the Friends of Ten Acres in Stirchley, Birmingham to provide a range of activities in local woodlands and green spaces.

Alan Bale, our experienced arborist and woodland management lead will be showing us the beautiful trees of Ten Acres along with handy tips on how to identify these trees for yourself.

Ten Acres is a stretch of land between Cartland Road and Dogpool Lane in Strichley, Birmingham. The woodland of Ten Acres sits between the River Bourn and the River Rea stretch and was previously derelict for some 30-40 years. In 2019 Sustainable Life took over management of the site and began the process of re-establishing the woodland, promoting native trees, natural succession and increased native biodiversity. The main park side has a well maintained pathway, that follows the River Rea but more woodland and overgrowth at either side, which Alan - with a team of hardworking volunteers - is working on this year to restore the view to the river and manage the river banks.

There are many fabulous trees on the Ten Acres site as well as three stages of natural woodland progression. The site has a variety of apple trees across the 7 hectares as well as two established orchards and a third being developed this year.
