Under the Plane Tree, a live gathering "on Missing Trees" in the city of Utrecht is an invitation to participate in a conversation about the relation between people and trees. It is conceived as a joint inquiry, partly as a silent conversation. How do we become aware of the presence of trees, or their absence? What kind of language can we use to express this awareness?

Event Information

Under the Plane Tree, a live gathering "on Missing Trees" in the city of Utrecht is an invitation to participate in a conversation about the relation between people and trees. It is conceived as a joint inquiry, partly as a silent conversation. How do we become aware of the presence of trees, or their absence? What kind of language can we use to express this awareness?

Ryszard Kapucinski wrote : “I noticed .. the relationship between naming and being, because I realized ….. (that) I had seen only that which I was able to name……I understood, in short, that the more words I knew, the richer, fuller, and more variegated would be the world that opened before me, and which I could capture.”

We develop relationships with certain trees in particular. When trees are felled or dead or simply out of site they can be dearly missed. Some trees we carry within.

And how do we communicate with trees - would it be possible to think of 'tree-tongue' a kind of interspecies language? A conversation in person with artist Ienke Kastelein.

This event is related to last years online gathering on missing trees in Urban Tree Festival 2021
