The Urban Tree Wikithon is an online tree themed Wikipedia edit-a-thon, to create, update and improve Wikipedia articles about all things arboreal, including notable trees from history and literature. In addition to editing articles, if you are a photographer please consider adding your tree photos to Wikimedia Commons, so these images can be added to illustrate Wikipedia articles.

Wikipedia editing will take place throughout the duration of the Urban Tree Festival. There will be a launch event on Saturday 15th May with some initial Wikipedia editing training provided, and a “show & tell” event on Sunday 23rd May for participants to celebrate and share information about the Wikipedia articles that they have worked on during the Wikithon.

We will provide lists and links to online resources and tutorials explaining how to edit Wikipedia.

These will cover the principles of contributing to Wikipedia. Plus the basics of creating and editing articles. Including how to create a user page, conflicts of interest, talk pages, how to edit in sandbox, notability, reliable sources and neutral point of view.

Please use use #wiktreepedia on social media to share details of your work in progress, including links to articles that you create or improve during the festival. Also follow the British Library’s Digital Scholarship blog, which will showcase and celebrate created, updated and improved Wikipedia tree articles.

TEXT TO BE UPDATED DEPENDING ON TYPE OF EVENT AND TICKET PLATFORM

We want you to have a great experience celebrating trees with the Urban Tree Festival. Please follow these guidelines and be respectful online.

  • To enable this to happen we will be releasing the zoom link enabling you to join your event before an event begins.

  • Please make sure you check your emails for the link and that you have Zoom installed on your device and are familiar with how it works if this is your first time using it.

  • Please join the event promptly, we will be ‘locking’ events five minutes after their advertised start time and which means late arrivals will not be allowed entry.

  • Please do not share the link to the Zoom meeting on social media or elsewhere as there is a capacity limit to each event, and we will only allow entry to those who have booked.

  • It is always our desire to create the safest events but we cannot accept any responsibility for the actions of others during live events. We will be moderating events and reserve the right to eject participants.

  • Please be wise and help make the Urban Tree Festival a safe and considerate platform for all to enjoy and thank you for supporting the Festival.

  • Please be aware that each Zoom meeting / live event will be recorded - you can hide your screen from view from the Zoom window
