Street Tree Survey Techniques
Capturing tree data for citizen science research
Volunteer Birmingham tree wardens are currently undertaking a survey of around 5,500 newly planted trees in Birmingham to evidence the primary reasons for non-survival of young trees on the street.
Up to 50 surveyors are being deployed across the 268 sq km of the city. The survey is based on US surveying practices and requires the capture of approximately 250,000 items of data. Only a third of this data is size measurement of the tree and its planting area.
This event shows a short video of how we are doing this on site. The purpose of the video is to show newly trained tree surveyors the practical tools and techniques of carrying out a street tree survey.
