Tree Feeling Walk

What do we feel about urban trees? A psychogeographic survey with Tamsin Grainger

Ticket Information

Tree Feeling Walk - Walk and Online Meetup

Date: Saturday 22nd May

Time: 10:30-11:30

Location: Online Zoom event

Tickets: Free, booking essential (donations welcomed)

This is a two-part event: When you register for the event you will be sent a link to an audio file for you to listen to whilst taking a walk amongst trees near you. How do I feel about this tree? How am I when we are together? How does the tree encourage me to behave? This walk can take place anytime before the online meet up on 22nd May.

We will then join together online to discuss our experience.

If you live in Edinburgh you can also join Tamsin for a walk on Saturday 15 May at 2:30pm. Details here.

There will be a recorded guide to listen to, before, during and after the walk, and it will direct you to carry out, notice, enquire, and focus on certain sensations and activities.

You will be prompted to record your findings with words, images, measurements (whichever you like), and you can do this alone or in a group (following the Covid rules). It is for all ages, and no prior knowledge of trees is necessary. You can participate in your imagination, on wheels, or by proxy (finding someone to walk for you, directing and keeping in contact with them).

The overall aim of the event is:

v  To get up close and cosy with an urban tree or trees

v  To find out whether and why we value them

v  To use our own felt, visceral, bodily experience to do this, rather than information from a book, screen or expert

v  To creatively broaden the remit for collecting data by using a wider variety of methods to find out their effect on us, including our sensual and personal reactions

We will ask practical questions about the size, class and health of the tree(s) using our hands, metaphor, mind and senses, and we will ask: How do I feel about this tree? How am I when we are together? How does the tree encourage me to behave? We are interested in interaction and connection, and curious to see if we rely on, and mutually benefit, each other, seeing as we are cohabiting. Ideally requires a smartphone to download SoundCloud, although a written version will be available (document / online).

We will then meet online to discuss our experience.

The Soundcloud and written version will be sent to you on booking, but you can also access them here:
