Save Our Street Trees is thrilled to be hosting its first-ever mini Urban Tree Festival in Northampton on May 21st!

Join us for an afternoon of FREE tree-themed fun for families and children at the beautiful urban country house and park Delapré Abbey in Northampton.

Between 2pm and 5pm there will be tree yoga, forest crafts, tree art workshops, guided tree trails and lots more activities to celebrate urban trees.

Save Our Street Trees is delighted to offer a tree-mendous afternoon of creative and nature-inspired activities in Northampton to celebrate the nationwide Urban Tree Festival.  All activities will start at the Coach House at the beautiful Delapré Abbey, in London Road, Northampton, NN4 8AW. 

We’ve teamed up with some fabulous partners for this mini festival. Check out the itinerary below…

Event schedule

2pm: Art class - get to know a tree through sketching.

2.15pm: Guided tree trail around Delapré grounds.

2.30pm-3pm: Tree yoga class for children.

3pm: Art class - get to know a tree through sketching.

3.3opm-4pm: Tree yoga class for children.

4.15pm: Guided tree trail around Delapré grounds.

All afternoon: Make a forest craft, or have a go at bark and leaf rubbing, tree quizzes, easy science projects and lots more. Make a nature pledge and hang it from our Wishing Tree.

Tree yoga class

Exploring trees big and small with YogaPebbles

Time: 2.30pm-3pm and 3.30pm-4pm. 

What’s involved? Join Lisa Greenough from Northampton-based YogaPebbles for an inclusive children's yoga class. Take part in a tree adventure with fun warm-ups, balances, stretches, breathing exercises and a beautiful, guided tree relaxation. A great introduction to yoga! (Attendees will receive a flyer for their first free community-based children's or family yoga class with YogaPebbles.) Activity starts at the Coach House.

Lisa is a trained SEN primary and ‘yoga for all’ teacher. She runs classes for children, teens, adults, and families across Northampton, specialising in yoga for individuals with additional learning needs. Find out more about her at yogapebbles.co.uk or Facebook @yogapebbles. 

What to bring: Mats and other equipment will be provided. You will need to be dressed comfortably for the weather and have a water bottle. Please mention any additional learning needs or medical conditions before the start of class.

Age range: Suitable for preschoolers and all school-age children. (Younger children welcome with supervision). 

Get to know a tree through sketching 

Tree art workshop with local artist Jean Edwards from Urbansketchers Northampton

Time: Every hour – 2pm, 3pm and 4pm. 

What’s involved? Jean will be helping you take a closer look at trees and explore some different types of sketching. You will focus on one tree using what you feel, see, and hear – drawing up-close and from a distance. Participants will sketch into mini origami sketchbooks, which they can take away with them after the activity. What to bring: All materials provided. 

Age range: Adults – and older children, if accompanied by adults who are also taking part.

Make a forest craft

Come and make crafts from twigs, cones and other natural materials with forest-school teacher Ali Fortuna

Time: All afternoon.

What’s involved? Learn how to make a buzzy Birch Cone Bee or a magical Elder Bubble Pipe with Ali from the Everdon Outdoor Learning Centre. Find out more about the centre at everdonoutdoorlearning.co.uk. Activity at the Coach House.

What to bring: All materials provided. 

Age range: Children 5+.

Guided tree trails

Explore the beautiful trees around Delapré Abbey garden and park with a guided trail

Time: 2.15pm and 4.15pm

What’s involved? Find out amazing facts about Delapré’s ancient and enormous trees with a short tree trail for children, led by Danielle Bird from Save Our Street Trees. Activity starts at the Coach House.

What to bring: Clothes suitable for walking in any weather.

Age range: Children 7+

Book: Drop-in



Tree activities 

Time: All afternoon

What’s involved? Visit our stall outside the Coach House between 2pm and 5pm to take part in tree and nature activities. We'll have crayons and paper so you can go wild making beautiful designs from trees and leaves. You can discover how tall the giant trees are at Delapré park with an easy science experiment - no climbing involved! Find out how you can get closer to urban trees with a fun activity to do with friends and siblings. And make a nature pledge to hang on our special Wishing Tree. Plus, pick up some Save Our Street Trees goodies to help us raise money for our community group!

Location of event

Delapré Abbey, Northampton

We’re so grateful to be able to run this event at Delapré Abbey. This 900-year-old urban country house is located just a mile from Northampton town centre. You can explore the House with a guided tour, browse books in the second-hand bookshop or tuck into delicious food at the café and restaurant. There are also formal and semi-formal gardens – with superb specimen trees in the understated arboretum – and 500 acres of wider parkland to enjoy. Most tickets for the Urban Tree Festival are free, but we ask attendees to please donate if they can.

We suggest a donation of £5 per event ticket and you can easily donate by clicking the donate button. Larger donations are always welcomed.
