Long-listed written pieces of 250 words or under submitted to the 2021 Urban Tree Festival writing competition on the theme of “trees close to you”

Cycles

A cherry blossom tree loved by robins blackbirds
and tits

Is my daily view

A couple
of dove pigeons nesting nearby swoop down
and peck at the buds about to bloom

Bursting
They take wing Landing
by my window to kiss and coo

And I
Watching
from my studio A voyeur
caught observing
a private passion

Last month the tree was bare
Now

as April dawns

the blossom almost over

pauses

for copper leaves and pink flowers In tandem
before

the burn
of hotter climes

The wind sweeps the last clinging petals

to the ground

Falling like tissue paper
