Event Information
Discover the hidden world of bats after dark on this guided wildlife walk, using bat detectors to listen for and (hopefully!) spot Pipistrelle bats as they emerge at dusk.
Led by Dr. Iain Boulton, Lambeth’s Borough Ecologist, this one-hour walk around Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens offers a unique opportunity to explore urban wildlife up close. You’ll learn how Common and Soprano Pipistrelle bats have adapted to city life, foraging for insects among gardens, open spaces, and street trees — all abundant in the Vauxhall area.
The walk begins just after sunset, meeting at the entrance to Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens on Kennington Lane, next to the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. From there, you’ll be guided through the area past Lime trees, the new Small Pleasure Gardens wildlife site, and along Cherry Tree Walk, before finishing at the basketball courts by Goding Street.
The route follows accessible paths and level grass surfaces (where appropriate and safe), making it suitable for wheelchairs and pushchairs. Please dress appropriately for outdoor conditions, wearing sturdy footwear and waterproof clothing.
This event is part of Big Vauxhall Tree Week, celebrating the trees, wildlife, and green spaces that shape this vibrant London neighbourhood.
